Access To Basic Needs

This index measures access and affordability of food, housing, and health insurance coverage across regions. We use data Food Insecurity rates, a metric developed by the US Department of Agriculture to measure “limited or uncertain access to adequate food.” To address housing affordability, we use the share of renter households that are “cost burdened”, that is, that pay more than 30 percent of their income for rent. To address access to health care, we use the percentages uninsured at two age groups, children below age 18, and adults ages 18-64.
